Tutorial 9 : Using Action Queries & Advanced Table Relationships
Queries can do more than display answers to questions, they can also perform actions on data in your tables. This tutorial will introduce you to action queries. Action queries add, change or delete multiple records from your tables at a time. Because action queries modify multiple records at one time you will first use a search query to select the appropriate records to modify and them modify it to be an action query. This is good practice because Access automatically saves the changes we make, so if you accidentally ran a delete query on the wrong records it could be very difficult to restore that data.
In this tutorial you will learn how to use four action queries: the make-table, append, delete and update queries. The Make-table query creates a new table by copying records from one or more existing tables. The Append query adds records from existing tables to other tables. The delete query, you guessed it, deletes records from one or more tables based on criteria you specify. The Update query changes selected field values from selected records in one or more tables. In the second part of the tutorial you will learn about joining tables, using both inner joins as you have done so far and also outer joins which you will learn about. Lastly you will learn about self-joins - this is when a table is joined with itself. Lastly you will learn about creating an index for your database. An index is a list that relates field values to the records that contain those values. |
By the end of this tutorial you will know how to:

The presentation above reiterates the key points from the Tutorial. It is great to use while going through the chapter as a notes road-map, however, just reading through the presentation will not be enough to understand the concepts provided in the textbook, you must work through the entire tutorial project. |
